With the American auto industry dominating the full-size truck market, Toyota is shaking things up with their 2022 Tundra model that's designed to appeal to loyal customers. The traditional leaf spring rear suspension present in most half-ton pickups has been replaced by coil springs that provide a more comfortable ride and improved driving experience than many of its competitors. Despite this upgrade, it continues to have an impressive hauling capacity of 12,000 pounds and boasts driver assistance features as standard equipment!

Despite its lack of a V-8 engine, the 2022 Tundra’s twin-turbo V-6 hybrid system produces an impressive 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque. Not to mention its interior upgrades - from a more stylish cabin layout to a 14.0 inch touchscreen infotainment system – it has all the requirements necessary for it to compete with domestic brands.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The 2022 Tundra sets itself apart from the pack by offering a powerful twin-turbo V-6 engine instead of the standard V-8, paired with an advanced 10-speed automatic transmission. This robust engine is available in three variations depending on the trim level - SR produces 348 horsepower and 405 pound feet of torque, while 389 horses and 479 pound feet can be found beneath other models' hoods. In testing at our track, this nonhybrid Limited version achieved a blistering 0 to 60mph time of just 6.1 seconds!

The hybrid version utilizes an electric motor built into the transmission providing a smooth, pure-electric drive at lower speeds. Combined output is 437 horses and 583 pound-feet of torque shrinking the zero-to-60 mph time to just 5.7 seconds - significantly faster than its predecessor! To add to this feat, we also changed up the rear suspension from leaf springs for something more appropriate for higher performance capabilities.

For those wanting extra off-road abilities, the TRD Pro packs a punch with its lifted suspension and specific dampers. Plus, it comes equipped with black 18-inch wheels mounted on all-terrain tires for superior traction in any environment. If you’re seeking something less extreme but still well prepared for dirt roads or trails, then either of the two other packages will suit your needs: one package offers an off-road suspension system and unique wheel set while the other adds a lowered suspension along with 20 inch wheels to enhance performance on uneven surfaces.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The Tundra can handle a towing capacity of up to 12,000 pounds - just slightly less than other full-size trucks like the F-150 which has a maximum hauling capacity of 14,000 lbs. In terms of payload capability, it maxes out at 1940 lbs., whereas several half-ton pickups have much higher limitations with Ford reaching an impressive 3250 pounds in its cargo bed.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

Boasting a nonhybrid powertrain, the two-wheel drive Tundra offers up to 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. All-wheel drive brings these figures down by 1mpg each. The hybrid model is capable of 20 mpg within cities and 24 mph outside them – although our 75mph route only saw 19mpg from it during testing!
